Story Ideas

Martha's Vineyard is one of the top vacation destinations in the world, so if you're looking to do a story on a great place to relax, we've got it all — but, did you also know that:

  • The Aquinnah Cliffs were created by glaciers 10,000 years ago.
  • In a world that is constantly changing or being threatened (by war, terrorist attacks, oil spills, etc.) we have changed very little. Martha's Vineyard has no chain restaurants (except for a Dairy Queen), no shopping malls, and no speed limit over 45 mph.
  • Martha's Vineyard is comprised of six distinct towns that are as different as night and day. (Just sit in on one of the town meetings and you will see what we mean.)
  • Edgartown (one of the six towns) was a whaling town in the 1800's, which was considered the first global economy.
  • Oak Bluffs (another one of the six towns) was the site of a Methodist campground during the religious revival of the 1800's. Tens of thousands of people would pitch tents and listen to church services in an outdoor tabernacle. The pitched tents gradually gave way to A-frame houses which became more and more elaborate as everyone tried to "out-do" each other. Today, there are more than 300 Gingerbread cottages encircling the historic tabernacle.
  • We’re located only seven miles off the coast of Cape Cod, and despite many misconceptions, we are not hard to get to and we are open year round.
  • The Vineyard is home to writers, artists, architects, and designers whose work is shown all over the world.
  • While seafood and clam chowder are staples on the Vineyard, we have four and five-star chefs who are experts in every type of cuisine.
